In the heart of Bath, North Carolina—the state's oldest town—stands a storied brick building that has witnessed over a century of community life: Swindell's Cash Store. Once a bustling general store, it was helmed for decades by Jack Swindell, a figure whose quiet departure left a lasting impression on the town's collective memory.
A Family Legacy
The building's origins trace back to 1905 when it was constructed as T.A. Brooks & Company. In 1930, Eura V. Swindell purchased the store, and by 1938, he became its sole proprietor. Under his stewardship, the store became a central hub for the community, offering everything from cookies to caskets—and, as local lore suggests, even driver's licenses for a quarter.
In 1959, Eura's son, Jack Swindell, inherited the business. For the next 24 years, Jack continued the family tradition, maintaining the store's role as a cornerstone of Bath's daily life.
The Day the Store Went Silent
In 1983, an unexpected event occurred: Jack Swindell went out for lunch and never returned. The store closed its doors, and Jack's sudden departure became a topic of local speculation. The building remained closed, a silent sentinel on South Main Street, until Jack's sister, Polly Swindell Sinclair, took steps to preserve its legacy.
Preservation and Renewal
Polly, who had moved to California, inherited the property and, in 2005, donated it to Preservation North Carolina. This act ensured that the building would be preserved and restored. Between 2005 and 2010, the store underwent a significant renovation, transforming it into a mixed-use space with commercial areas on the ground floor and residential lofts above.
A New Chapter
Today, the building that once housed Swindell's Cash Store has been revitalized, blending its historic charm with modern functionality. It stands as a testament to the town's resilience and the enduring legacy of the Swindell family.
Remembering Jack Swindell
While much about Jack Swindell's life remains private, his role in Bath's history is undeniable. Through his stewardship of the family store, he contributed to the fabric of the community, leaving behind a legacy that continues to resonate with residents and visitors alike.
